The Boogie Report
Serving Our Constituency Across All Borders
Oct. 15,,2007

Greetings

Tyler Perry Movie Opens In The # 1=20
Spot

 Academy Awards heavyweights such as=20
George Clooney and Cate Blanchett were=20
no match for another of Tyler Perry's=20
populist tales.

The Lionsgate release "Tyler Perry's Why=20
Did I Get Married?", a marital yarn whose=20
ensemble cast includes Janet Jackson,=20
Malik Yoba, Jill Scott and writer-director=20
Perry, debuted as the No. 1 weekend=20
movie with $21.5 million, according to=20
studio estimates Sunday.

The Tommy Johnson Blues Foundation is=20
pleased to announce it's Second Annual=20
Reception and Blues Festival.=20

This year's Festival promises to=20
be a fun-filled day for the entire family.=20
Local vendors will be on hand to showcase=20
their products.
 Our concert stage will=20
be graced by some of the finest Blues and=20
R&B Performers around and there will be=20
activities to keep the children entertained.=20
Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be=20
available for purchase from local vendors.=20

The Festivities will take place on=20
October 19th and October 20th in Jackson=20
and Crystal Springs respectively. Tommy=20
Johnson was a native of Crystal Springs=20
and many of Johnson's family members=20
reside in Crystal Springs.
 It is fitting=20
and proper that we celebrate Tommy=20
Johnson and his musical legacy in the=20
place that he called home - Crystal=20
Springs. As we celebrate Tommy's life and=20
his musical accomplishments, we must=20
also acknowledge the foundation's primary=20
goal. The primary goal of the Tommy=20
Johnson Blues Foundation is to raise funds=20
to meet the cost of reopening Warm=20
Springs Cemetery.=20
Tommy Johnson=20
has lain in an unmarked grave in this=20
cemetery for more than half a century.=20
Blues lovers from around the world (along=20
with Tommy's family) eagerly await the day=20
when they will finally be able to visit the=20
grave of the Legendary Blues-man.

Come out and CELEBRATE with us and=20
help us get Warm Springs Cemetery re-
opened!=20

Soulful Singer Ruthie Foster to hold=20
benefit=20
concert for THEARC

Southeast Washington's THEARC=20
announced today=20
that soulful-singer Ruthie Foster, described=20
as the=20
newest voice in old-school soul, will=20
perform a benefit=20
concert for the "One in a Million Campaign=20
for=20
THEARC," on Wednesday, October 17,=20
2007 at 7:00=20
pm in THEARC's Theater, 1901=20
Mississippi Avenue=20
SE, Washington, DC. Tickets are $40 and=20
includes a=20
pre-show dessert reception. Reservations=20
can be=20
made through THEARC by calling (202)=20
481-3272 and=20
by visiting the website, www.thearcdc.org.

The Texas-bred Foster's sound artfully=20
combines=20
blues, gospel, roots and folk music rich=20
with honest=20
spirituality and emotion. The Philadelphia=20
City Paper=20
writes: "The energy she brings with just=20
voice and=20
guitar is stunning. Ruthie's drawn=20
comparisons to Ella=20
and Aretha, but musically neither is really=20
close. What=20
she does have in common with Fitzgerald=20
and=20
Franklin is the irresistible blaze-it's=20
impossible to look=20
away, even close the eyes, for one=20
second."

Foster's new album, "The Phenomenal=20
Ruthie Foster,"=20
has been described as an honest to=20
goodness=20
classic soul album in the spirit of Sam=20
Cooke. Her=20
recent live music release, Stages, is a=20
collection of 14=20
songs recorded in Austin, TX, Houston and=20
Boston

Ask The Twins

Dear Twins: Recently I met a wonderful=20
man or so I thought until I found out just=20
what a damaged soul he really is and just=20
how much I can't seem to help him. You=20
see he is suffering from post-traumatic=20
stress syndrome. He is just back from Iraq=20
after having been over there for twenty-five=20
months. He's trying to get back into the=20
swing of things but I'm not sure if he stands=20
a fighting chance at ever having a normal=20
life. His sleep pattern is very disrupted and=20
his time awake is constantly invaded by=20
flashbacks to some of the awful things he=20
has seen and done. He's seeing a=20
psychiatrist and he's going to a support=20
group but he's getting discourage because=20
he doesn't feel he's ever going to get his=20
life back. He has frequent crying spells and=20
then outbursts of anger without any=20
warning. What can I do to help him? Do=20
you all think he's ever going to come out of=20
this?

artists selected by its members. They are universally=20
recognized as the highest honor given to Blues=20
artists.

The Nomination=20
Process

The Blues Music Awards honor those professional=20
artists and recordings that stand out within the=20
eligibility period, which runs from November 1 through=20
October 31. In addition to the awards for the past=20
year's top recordings, additional categories honor=20
individual, actively touring artists for their overall=20
excellence and accomplishment in that year.

Each September, The Blues Foundation solicits from=20
the labels--even the single artist label--a list of their=20
eligible recordings. If you are a record label or blues=20
musician who released a CD during the period=20
November 1, 2006 to October 31, 2007, go to=20
http://www.blues.or

=3DS0284&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.blues.org%2Flabels%2F) to submit your release=
 for=20
consideration by the nominators. As per the more=20
detailed explanation below, your CD is eligible by the=20
fact of its release, but it sure doesn't hurt to add it to=20
this list for the convenience of the nominators. Does=20
that mean we want every act that released a CD during=20
the period to submit? Probably not, but whether your=20
release has a legitimate shot at a Blues Music Award=20
nomination--that is your call. This part of the process=20
will end October 19.=20

T.I. Arrested On Gun Charge Before BET Awards

IT.I.'s night to shine at the BET Hip Hop Awards didn't=20
work out the way he'd probably expected.=20

The rapper (real name: Clifford Harris) was arrested=20
Saturday afternoon by agents from the Bureau of=20
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on charges of buying=20
illegal machine guns, just hours before he was=20
scheduled to appear at the awards show, according to=20
Reuters. Agents said the rapper was arrested as he=20
accepted delivery of three machine guns and two=20
silencers from a bodyguard. He is due in court=20
Monday.=20

"This convicted felon allegedly was trying to add=20
several machine guns to an already large and entirely=20
illegal arsenal of guns," David E. Nahmias, U.S.=20
Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, said in a=20
statement.=20

"Thanks to the good and quick work of ATF, he is now=20
in custody and his firearms have been seized," the=20
statement continued.=20

T.I. was convicted of a violation of the Georgia=20
Controlled Substances Act in 1998 and given seven=20
years probation, the Department of Justice said.=20

The arrest was the result of an undercover operation=20
by ATF agents that started on October 2 when agents=20
learned an individual was seeking to buy machine=20
guns without registering them, the statement=20
continued.=20

That individual, an unnamed bodyguard for T.I., was=20
arrested on Wednesday after paying $2,200 for three=20
machine guns, two silencers and a pistol. The=20
bodyguard said he was buying the guns for T.I., and, in=20
cooperation with agents, arranged to deliver them to=20
the rapper on Saturday. It is a federal offense for a=20
convicted felon to have someone else purchase=20
firearms on their behalf.=20

"This investigation developed very quickly," said=20
Vanessa McLemore, Special Agent in Charge of ATF's=20
Atlanta Division, in the statement. "We learned only=20
this Wednesday that the cooperating witness was=20
allegedly buying the machine guns for Harris. The=20
cooperating witness told Harris on Thursday that he=20
had obtained the items, and on Friday Harris made it=20
clear that he wanted them delivered to him [Saturday].=20
Harris then agreed to meet and took possession of=20
the machine guns [Saturday] afternoon. He now faces=20
serious federal charges and a potentially long prison=20
sentence."=20

The arrest took place in the parking lot of a downtown=20
Atlanta shopping center, according to the Atlanta=20
Journal Constitution.=20

Three other firearms were found in the vehicle T.I. was=20
driving and during a search of his home in College=20
Park six other firearms were found a bedroom closet,=20
according to Reuters.=20

On Saturday evening, several ATF agents, most of=20
them wearing medical gloves, carried about 10 boxes,=20
as well as papers and folders, out of T.I.'s house and=20
placed them into a police car at the bottom of the=20
driveway, according to the Journal Constitution.=20

At press time, T.I.'s representative at Atlantic Records=20
had not granted MTV News' requests for comment.=20

T.I.'s absence from the BET event -- where he was=20
nominated for nine awards, more than any other artist -
- was notable. The MC was scheduled to perform=20
alongside Wyclef Jean for their nominated=20
collaboration, "You Know What It Is," but with T.I.=20
missing in action, the show's host, Katt Williams, filled=20
in.=20

The comedian, clad in jeans, a white T-shirt, hoodie=20
and white hat, appeared onstage and brought the=20
audience to cheers momentarily when fans thought=20
T.I. was in the building. But Williams revealed himself,=20
and 'Clef carried on the set. DJ Drama broke the=20
silence by shouting "Free T.I." along with Busta=20
Rhymes, and David Banner also voiced his support.=20

E-40, who was supposed to announce T.I. and=20
Wyclef's performance, told the crowd, "We're going to=20
hold it down for T.I."=20

"I really don't know everything that happened," Mike=20
Jones told MTV Radio. "But everyone showed him love=20
and held him down the right way. I was expecting to=20
see his performance as well, but a lot of stuff went on=20
and I don't know exactly what happened yet.=20
Whatever's going on, we got much love for Tip."=20

Common took home the coveted Album of The Year=20
nod in a tie with T.I., and accepted the award on behalf=20
of Tip.=20

Just the other night, T.I. was seen onstage with=20
onetime lyrical rival Ludacris. He put his arm=20
around 'Cris as Luda performed a freestyle verse over=20
50 Cent's "I Get Money." The verse, which has=20
garnered attention on mixtapes, features Luda's boast=20
about winning the Grammy for Rap Album of the Year,=20
an award Tip openly says he should have won.=20
Witnesses say Tip and Luda's onstage pairing was=20
not exactly a love fest, although there was no incident.=20

T.I. was in the middle of working on his new album, a=20
follow-up to this year's T.I. vs. T.I.P., as well as=20
developing some films. On November 2, he'll be seen=20
in the film "American Gangster." He plays the nephew=20
of heroin kingpin Frank Lucas, who chooses between=20
a possible career in the major leagues or being a part=20
of the infamous family business.

TOOTIE'S LAST SUIT

As early as the 1700s, African Americans in New=20
Orleans masqueraded as Native Americans in honor=20
of the refuge local tribes offered runaway slaves in the=20
bayous of New Orleans, and of bonds of friendship=20
and marriage forged between these peoples. By the=20
Civil War, the identity of New Orleans had been cast in=20
the crucible of the city's singular Mardi Gras=20
celebration- one that consolidated the power of white=20
ruling elites, a tradition that continued long after=20
Emancipation. But by the 1880s, New Orleans' African=20
Americans had organized themselves into Mardi Gras=20
Indian tribes or gangs that "masked Indian," and often=20
fought pitched battles on Mardi Gras day. In the=20
atmosphere of post-Reconstruction's injustices and=20
hypocrisies, "masking Indian" was an implicit civil=20
rights protest aimed at white elites and at segregation,=20
in keeping with New Orleans' carnivalesque spirit.=20

The feature-length documentary, TOOTIE'S LAST SUIT=20
explores the complex relationships, rituals, history,=20
and music of New Orleans' vibrant Mardi Gras Indian=20
culture while telling the story of Allison "Tootie"=20
Montana, former Chief of Yellow Pocahontas Hunters.=20
Celebrated throughout the New Orleans as "the=20
prettiest," for the beauty and inventiveness of his=20
elaborately beaded Mardi Gras costumes, Tootie=20
Montana masked for 52 years, longer than any other=20
Mardi Gras Indian.

3:30 pm and I couldn't believe my eyes it was a long=20

here and waiting to get their partying on.I had to find=20
out how long these folks had been standing and=20

some of her girlfriends and they had been at Club=20

African Radio Opts Out Of Black History Month

TAfrican community radio station, Voice of Africa=20

Radio, has opted out of these month's black history=20

celebrations, as a display of protest at the attempts=20

to condense at least 2000 years of rich African history=20

and culture into just 31 days.

Space Clottey, Founder and Project Manager said of=20

the Black History Month ban: "Africans have been part=20

of British culture for at least 2000 years, but=20

unfortunately this essential part of our heritage has=20

been clearly neglected. Quite frankly, it's just absurd=20

to try and compress all that rich culture and history=20

into just one month."

Black History Month, celebrated every October in the=20

UK by communities and organizations throughout the=20

country is supposed to be a time of remembrance;=20

paying tribute to and educating others about the=20

important people and events in black history.

Black History Month was pioneered by African=20

American Carter G Woodson. He started in 1927 by=20

promoting 'Negro History Week' in the second week of=20

February, initially celebrating the birthdays of=20

Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. By the=20
1960s=20

it has evolved into Black History Month and was=20

subsequently introduced in other countries, including=20

the UK.

Clottey said: "If African history was taught in schools=20

in the UK, even as little as once a week, it would be=20

far more productive and educational, as opposed to=20

cramming it into 31 days. Surely when a culture has=20

contributed so much in terms of financial wealth and=20

diversity, we owe it to ourselves to be better=20

educated in knowing what that our contribution was."=20

VOAR is based in Newham, one of the largest=20

ethnically diverse boroughs in London. The station,=20

which was founded in January 2000, was broadcast=20

until April 2003 as an unlicensed radio station but won=20

a 5 year permanent radio licence in February 2006.=20

The station said it will still be hosting an array of=20

specialist shows during the month of October, which=20

it now refers to as 'Africa Awareness Month'.

Celebrating his joy of the sax

For Duke Ellington, the pinnacle of praise was to=20
describe a musician as "beyond category." The late=20
Texas-born saxophonist and composer Julius=20
Hemphill, who came up through the worlds of R&B=20
and jazz, merits the full measure of that Ellingtonian=20
encomium.

Best known as the cofounder and=20
principal composer of the World Saxophone Quartet, a=20
group hailed as revolutionary in the 1980s as a stand-
alone sax section that offered the jazz equivalent of a=20
classical string quartet, Hemphill (1938-1995) also=20
composed music for jazz bands big and small, scores=20
for dance and theater pieces, and concert pieces for=20
classical instrumentation.

Many of Hemphill's=20
compositions can be heard Thursday night at the=20
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, performed by=20
pianist Ursula Oppens, the Daedalus String Quartet,=20
saxophonist Marty Ehrlich, and the Julius Hemphill=20
Sextet. It's the latest installment of the=20
museum's "Composer Portraits" series, presented in=20
collaboration with Columbia University's Miller Theatre

Inside, though, it's all neon, disco d=E9cor, and plasma=20

beautifully framed with mirrors and a red neon sign=20

Tyler Perry: "What's Done In the Dark"by Brinda Fuller Willis, Ph. D.

What's Done In The Dark" at Mercy=20
Hospital was=20
exposed on the stage of Thalia Mara Hall,=20
Friday night=20
October 5, 2007 before a packed house=20
during the first=20
Jackson, Mississippi performance.=20

Tyler Perry's hilariously funny stage play set=20
the crowd=20
on fire with one-liners that resonated the=20
culture and=20
dialect of the Southern vernacular in ways=20
few artisans=20
can deliver. The dialogue characterized the=20
everyday=20
conversations of African Americans that=20
can only be=20
understood from an intra-cultural=20
perspective making=20
it even funnier as the actors spoke the=20
words of=20
sentences frequently finished by the=20
audience.=20

Perry brought to life characters that are=20
ingrained in=20
the social fabric of the African American=20
persona that=20
are so familiar giving a birds-eye view into=20
the most=20
intimate and delicate details of secrets that=20
include=20
cheating husbands, deadbeat dads,=20
infidelity, single=20
parenthood, unrequited love, abounding=20
faith in God=20
and the perseverance of Black women.

THE GREENWOOD BLUES FESTIVAL 2007

Hello Blues and Southern Soul=20
fans.
My 2007 Blues and southern soul=20
ride kept me in my own backyard as I=20
recently attended "The 2007 Greenwood=20
Blues Festival".At most of the shows that I=20
attend I've probably seen the artists=20
perform already,some of them probably=20
several times but its always good to see a=20
new artist perform for the very first time.The=20
Leflore County Civic Center played host to=20
this blues and southern soul party.This=20
building has a lot of good memories for=20
me.I think everytime that I attend a show=20
here I always reflect back to the time that I=20
met and saw our beloved Jackie Neal=20
perform.I know you all have heard me talk=20
about that night a thousand times but I=20
would be lying to myself if I say I don't get=20
sentimental everytime I walk through the=20
civic center doors and not think about her.It=20
was her final performance as she would be=20
taken away only five(5) days later.I guess=20
anytime there is a show held at this venue=20
and if I am in attendance,my review will be=20
dedicated to her.=20

The lineup for this blues and southern soul=20
party included Betty Padgett,Leon=20
McMullen,Bigg Robb & Da Problem=20
Solvas,Nathaniel Kimble and Mel=20
Waiters.When I arrived,to my suprise it=20
wasn't a large crowd on hand.I know one of=20
the local SWAC colleges was having=20
homecoming and that usually attracts a=20
large crowd but I had no idea it would=20
effect the attendance of this show.I did run=20
into a couple of familar faces, my man=20
Cyerio Hughes(WGNL Radio=20
personality),Bluz Queen from "The Kitty=20
Kitty Club" and my Godfather, friend and=20
mentor,Jerry"Boogie"Mason along with his=20
beautiful daughter Kim were in the house.It=20
was plenty of people down front by the=20
stage area with their reserved tables and=20
we had a table down front as well so we=20
were in a good spot for tonight's show.It=20
was a BYOB affair so the people were=20
ready to get their blues on tonight. So with=20
my man Cyerio kicking it with "The=20
Godfather" and "Da Big Dawg" and plenty=20
of cold Bud Light on hand sit back good=20
people and let me take you on this blues=20
and southern soul ride.

Remembering Tommy Johnson

The Tommy Johnson Blues Foundation is a non-
profit,=20
tax-exempt foundation working to preserve the legacy=20
and music of legendary blues=20
artist Tommy Johnson. The foundation's work has=20
been focused on restoring the Warm Springs=20
Cemetery in Crystal Springs, MS, where Tommy=20
Johnson has lain in an unmarked grave for more than=20
half a century.

The church that maintained the cemetery has=20
gone to disrepair, and the land around the site=20
has reverted to private use. The Foundation=20
has been working to restore the grounds and=20
re-open public access to the cemetery. Through these=20
efforts the site was designated a=20
"historically significant abandoned cemetery"=20
by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History,=20
and in October of 2001 a headstone=20
was provided for Tommy Johnson's grave by the=20
Mount Zion Memorial Fund, a non-profit group that=20
helps to restore the grave sites of Mississippi=20
musicians. The gravestone is kept at the Crystal=20
Springs Public Library=20

Soul Patrol Digital CD

The Internet provides an amazing opportunity for the=20

Its ability to bypass the standardized channels of=20

Solomon Burke

While Solomon Burke never made a major=20
impact upon the pop audience - he never,=20
in fact, had a Top 20 hit - he was an=20
important early soul pioneer. On his '60s=20
singles for Atlantic, he brought a country=20
influence into R&B with emotional phrasing=20
and intricately constructed, melodic ballads=20
and midtempo songs. At the same time, he=20
was surrounded with=20
sophisticated "uptown" arrangements and=20
was provided with much of his material by=20
his producers, particularly Bert Berns. The=20
combination of gospel, pop, country, and=20
production polish was basic to the recipe=20
of early soul. While Burke wasn't the only=20
one pursuing this path, not many others did=20
so as successfully. And he, like Otis=20
Redding and Wilson Pickett, was an=20
important influence upon the Rolling=20
Stones, who covered Burke's "Cry to Me"=20
and "Everybody Needs Somebody to=20
Love" on their early albums.=20

Burke came by his gospel roots even more=20
deeply than most soul stars. He was=20
preaching at his family's Philadelphia=20
church and hosting his own gospel radio=20
show, even before he'd reached his teens.=20
He began recording gospel and R&B=20
sides for Apollo in the mid- to late '50s.=20
Like several former gospel singers (Aretha=20
Franklin, Wilson Pickett), he was molded=20
into a more secular direction when he=20
signed with Atlantic in the 1960s. Burke=20
had a wealth of high-charting R&B hits in=20
the early half of the '60s, which crossed=20
over to the pop listings in a mild fashion as=20
well. "Just Out of Reach," "Cry to Me," "If=20
You Need Me," "Got to Get You Off My=20
Mind," "Tonight's the Night," and "Goodbye=20
Baby (Baby Goodbye)" were the most=20
successful of these, although, unlike=20
Franklin or Pickett, he wasn't able to=20
expand his R&B base into a huge pop=20
following as well. He left Atlantic in the=20
late '60s and spent the next decade=20
hopping between various labels, getting=20
his biggest hit with a cover of Creedence=20
Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary" in=20
1969, and recording an album in the=20
late '70s with cult soulster Swamp Dogg as=20
producer.=20

In the 1980s and 1990s, Burke became=20
one of the most visible living exponents of=20
classic soul music, continuing to tour and=20
record albums in a rootsy, at times gospel-
ish style. Although these were critically well=20
received, their stylistic purity also ensured=20
that their market was primarily confined to=20
roots music enthusiasts rather than a pop=20
audience. His live and later recorded work,=20
however, is a favorite of those who want to=20
experience a soul legend with his talents=20
and stylistic purity relatively intact. Burke's=20
2002 release Don't Give Up on Me was=20
hailed as a major comeback for the=20
legendary soul man. Great songwriters like=20
Elvis Costello, Dan Penn, Nick Lowe, and=20
Tom Waits contributed songs and Joe=20
Henry produced the album, which has been=20
compared to Johnny Cash's landmark=20
American Recordings. After the critical=20
success of Don't Give Up on Me reaffirmed=20
Burke's status as one of the greatest living=20
exponents of classic soul, the singer=20
teamed up with producer Don Was for=20
Make Do with What You Got, a updated=20
variation on his classic style that was=20
released in spring 2005. A year later,=20
Burke released an interesting country and=20
soul hybrid, Nashville, on Shout! Factory.

"When Horace Silver once wrote out his=20
rules for musical composition (in the liner=20

importance of "meaningful simplicity." The=20

<b>Soulful Singer Ruthie Foster to hold=20
benefit=20
concert for THEARC</b><br><br>
Southeast Washington's THEARC=20
announced today=20
that soulful-singer Ruthie Foster, described=20
as the=20
newest voice in old-school soul, will=20
perform a benefit=20
concert for the "One in a Million Campaign=20
for=20
THEARC," on Wednesday, October 17,=20
2007 at 7:00=20
pm in THEARC's Theater, 1901=20
Mississippi Avenue=20
SE, Washington, DC. Tickets are $40 and=20
includes a=20
pre-show dessert reception. Reservations=20

<br><br>
The Texas-bred Foster's sound artfully=20
combines=20
blues, gospel, roots and folk music rich=20
with honest=20
spirituality and emotion. The Philadelphia=20
City Paper=20
writes: "The energy she brings with just=20
voice and=20
guitar is stunning. Ruthie's drawn=20
comparisons to Ella=20
and Aretha, but musically neither is really=20
close. What=20
she does have in common with Fitzgerald=20
and=20
Franklin is the irresistible blaze-it's=20
impossible to look=20
away, even close the eyes, for one=20
second."
<br><br>
Foster's new album, "The Phenomenal=20
Ruthie Foster,"=20
has been described as an honest to=20
goodness=20
classic soul album in the spirit of Sam=20
Cooke. Her=20
recent live music release, Stages, is a=20
collection of 14=20
songs recorded in Austin, TX, Houston and=20
Boston

<b>FROM THE DESK OF RONNIE=20

Most of us carry our cell phones with=20

numbers stored in their memory but=20
nobody, other=20
than ourselves, knows which of these=20
numbers=20
belong to our closest family or friends.
<br><br>
If we were to be involved in an accident or
taken=20
seriously ill, the people attending us would
have our=20
mobile phone but wouldn't know who to=20
call. Yes,=20
there are hundreds of numbers stored but
which one=20
is the contact person in case of an=20
emergency?=20
Hence=20
this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency)=20
Campaign. The=20
concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It
is a method=20
of contact during emergency situations. As=20
cell=20
phones are carried by the majority of the
population,=20
all you need to do is store the number of a
contact=20
person or persons who should be=20
contacted during=20
emergency under the name "ICE" (In Case=20
Of=20
Emergency).=20

        Dear Twins: Recently I met a wonderful=20
man or so I thought until I found out just=20
what a damaged soul he really is and just=20
how much I can't seem to help him. You=20
see he is suffering from post-traumatic=20
stress syndrome. He is just back from Iraq=20
after having been over there for twenty-five=20
months. He's trying to get back into the=20
swing of things but I'm not sure if he stands=20
a fighting chance at ever having a normal=20
life. His sleep pattern is very disrupted and=20
his time awake is constantly invaded by=20
flashbacks to some of the awful things he=20
has seen and done. He's seeing a=20
psychiatrist and he's going to a support=20
group but he's getting discourage because=20
he doesn't feel he's ever going to get his=20
life back. He has frequent crying spells and=20
then outbursts of anger without any=20
warning. What can I do to help him? Do=20
you all think he's ever going to come out of=20
this?

The 29th Blues Music Awards will be Thursday May 8=20
at the Grand Casino and Hotel in Tunica, MS.<br><br>
The event brings together Blues performers, industry=20
representatives and fans from all over the world to=20
celebrate the best in Blues recordings and=20
performances from the previous year. Each year, the=20
Foundation present The Blues Music Awards to the=20
artists selected by its members. They are universally=20
recognized as the highest honor given to Blues=20
artists.<br><br><br>
The Nomination=20
Process</b><br><br>

The Blues Music Awards honor those professional=20
artists and recordings that stand out within the=20
eligibility period, which runs from November 1 through=20
October 31. In addition to the awards for the past=20
year's top recordings, additional categories honor=20
individual, actively touring artists for their overall=20
excellence and accomplishment in that year.
<br><br>
Each September, The Blues Foundation solicits from=20
the labels--even the single artist label--a list of their=20
eligible recordings. If you are a record label or blues=20
musician who released a CD during the period=20
November 1, 2006 to October 31, 2007, go to=20

consideration by the nominators.
This part of the process=20
will end October 19. <br><br>

        <p >

Monday.=20

"This convicted felon allegedly was trying to add=20
several machine guns to an already large and entirely=20
illegal arsenal of guns," David E. Nahmias, U.S.=20
Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, said in a=20
statement.=20

The arrest was the result of an undercover operation=20
by ATF agents that started on October 2 when agents=20
learned an individual was seeking to buy machine=20
guns without registering them, the statement=20
continued.=20

He now faces=20
serious federal charges and a potentially long prison=20
sentence."=20

<br>
T.I.'s absence from the BET event -- where he was=20
nominated for nine awards, more than any other artist -
- was notable. The MC was scheduled to perform=20
alongside Wyclef Jean for their nominated=20
collaboration, "You Know What It Is," but with T.I.=20
missing in action, the show's host, Katt Williams, filled=20
in.=20
<br>
The comedian, clad in jeans, a white T-shirt, hoodie=20
and white hat, appeared onstage and brought the=20
audience to cheers momentarily when fans thought=20
T.I. was in the building. But Williams revealed himself,=20
and 'Clef carried on the set. DJ Drama broke the=20
silence by shouting "Free T.I." along with Busta=20
Rhymes, and David Banner also voiced his support.=20
<br>
E-40, who was supposed to announce T.I. and=20
Wyclef's performance, told the crowd, "We're going to=20
hold it down for T.I."=20
<br>

Common took home the coveted Album of The Year=20
nod in a tie with T.I., and accepted the award on behalf=20
of Tip.=20
<br>
<br>
T.I. was in the middle of working on his new album, a=20
follow-up to this year's T.I.

As early as the 1700s, African Americans in New=20
Orleans masqueraded as Native Americans in honor=20
of the refuge local tribes offered runaway slaves in the=20
bayous of New Orleans, and of bonds of friendship=20
and marriage forged between these peoples. By the=20
Civil War, the identity of New Orleans had been cast in=20
the crucible of the city's singular Mardi Gras=20
celebration- one that consolidated the power of white=20
ruling elites, a tradition that continued long after=20
Emancipation. But by the 1880s, New Orleans' African=20
Americans had organized themselves into Mardi Gras=20
Indian tribes or gangs that "masked Indian," and often=20
fought pitched battles on Mardi Gras day. In the=20
atmosphere of post-Reconstruction's injustices and=20
hypocrisies, "masking Indian" was an implicit civil=20
rights protest aimed at white elites and at segregation,=20
in keeping with New Orleans' carnivalesque spirit.=20
<br><br>
The feature-length documentary, TOOTIE'S LAST SUIT=20
explores the complex relationships, rituals, history,=20
and music of New Orleans' vibrant Mardi Gras Indian=20
culture while telling the story of Allison "Tootie"=20
Montana, former Chief of Yellow Pocahontas Hunters.=20
Celebrated throughout the New Orleans as "the=20
prettiest," for the beauty and inventiveness of his=20
elaborately beaded Mardi Gras costumes, Tootie=20
Montana masked for 52 years, longer than any other=20
Mardi Gras Indian.

        <p >
Hello Blues and Southern Soul fans I am excited to be=20
sitting here and writing my review for the second stop=20
on the 2007 WDIA JUKE JOINT TOUR.I'm definetly=20
feeling like a lil kid who is opening up all his presents=20
on Christmas Day.Last week I was able to experience=20
all the excitement that surrounds this WDIA Juke Joint=20
Tour and I thought I had it figured out.Good people=20
was I wrong.I told myself, you better drive up early so=20
you can get setup and possibly be able to converse=20
with all these hardworking artists.Showtime was at=20
6:00 pm so I wanted to arrive a couple of hours=20
early.LD'S CLUB PISCES was the host for this blues=20
and southern soul party.I arrived at the show around=20
3:30 pm and I couldn't believe my eyes it was a long=20
line assembled and fans were hoping to gain entry=20
into tonights venue.I never imagined that it would be=20
so many people already there. The show was still=20
about three(3) hours away and these fans were all=20
here and waiting to get their partying on.I had to find=20
out how long these folks had been standing and=20
waiting to gain entry. One lady,MS. Tiffany Hardy said=20
she had come all the way from Columbus,Ohio with=20
some of her girlfriends and they had been at Club=20
Pisces since 12:30.Thats approximately three(3)=20
hours and still another three hours before showtime=20
so we are talking about fans waiting at least six(6)=20
hours to be apart of this WDIA JUKE JOINT=20
TOUR.AMAZING!

TAfrican community radio station, Voice of Africa=20

Radio, has opted out of these month's black history=20

celebrations, as a display of protest at the attempts=20

to condense at least 2000 years of rich African history=20

and culture into just 31 days.<br>

Space Clottey, Founder and Project Manager said of=20

the Black History Month ban: "Africans have been part=20

of British culture for at least 2000 years, but=20

unfortunately this essential part of our heritage has=20

been clearly neglected. Quite frankly, it's just absurd=20

to try and compress all that rich culture and history=20

into just one month."<br>

Black History Month, celebrated every October in the=20

UK by communities and organizations throughout the=20

country is supposed to be a time of remembrance;=20

paying tribute to and educating others about the=20

important people and events in black history.

Black History Month was pioneered by African=20

American Carter G Woodson. He started in 1927 by=20

promoting 'Negro History Week' in the second week of=20

February, initially celebrating the birthdays of=20

Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. By the=20
1960s=20

it has evolved into Black History Month and was=20

subsequently introduced in other countries, including=20

the UK.
<br>

For Duke Ellington, the pinnacle of praise was to=20
describe a musician as "beyond category." The late=20
Texas-born saxophonist and composer Julius=20
Hemphill, who came up through the worlds of R&B=20
and jazz, merits the full measure of that Ellingtonian=20
encomium.<br><br>Best known as the cofounder and=20
principal composer of the World Saxophone Quartet, a=20
group hailed as revolutionary in the 1980s as a stand-
alone sax section that offered the jazz equivalent of a=20
classical string quartet, Hemphill (1938-1995) also=20
composed music for jazz bands big and small, scores=20
for dance and theater pieces, and concert pieces for=20
classical instrumentation.<br><br>Many of Hemphill's=20
compositions can be heard Thursday night at the=20
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, performed by=20
pianist Ursula Oppens, the Daedalus String Quartet,=20
saxophonist Marty Ehrlich, and the Julius Hemphill=20
Sextet. It's the latest installment of the=20
museum's "Composer Portraits" series, presented in=20
collaboration with Columbia University's Miller Theatre

during the first=20
Jackson, Mississippi performance.=20
<br><br>
Tyler Perry's hilariously funny stage play set=20
the crowd=20
on fire with one-liners that resonated the=20
culture and=20
dialect of the Southern vernacular in ways=20
few artisans=20
can deliver. The dialogue characterized the=20
everyday=20
conversations of African Americans that=20
can only be=20
understood from an intra-cultural=20
perspective making=20
it even funnier as the actors spoke the=20
words of=20
sentences frequently finished by the=20
audience.=20
<br><br>
Perry brought to life characters that are=20
ingrained in=20
the social fabric of the African American=20
persona that=20
are so familiar giving a birds-eye view into=20
the most=20
intimate and delicate details of secrets that=20
include=20
cheating husbands, deadbeat dads,=20
infidelity, single=20
parenthood, unrequited love, abounding=20
faith in God=20
and the perseverance of Black women.

        <p >
        Hello Blues and Southern Soul=20
fans.<br>My 2007 Blues and southern soul=20
ride kept me in my own backyard as I=20
recently attended "The 2007 Greenwood=20
Blues Festival".At most of the shows that I=20
attend I've probably seen the artists=20
perform already,some of them probably=20
several times but its always good to see a=20
new artist perform for the very first time.The=20
Leflore County Civic Center played host to=20
this blues and southern soul party.This=20
building has a lot of good memories for=20
me.I think everytime that I attend a show=20
here I always reflect back to the time that I=20
met and saw our beloved Jackie Neal=20
perform.I know you all have heard me talk=20
about that night a thousand times but I=20
would be lying to myself if I say I don't get=20
sentimental everytime I walk through the=20
civic center doors and not think about her.It=20
was her final performance as she would be=20
taken away only five(5) days later.I guess=20
anytime there is a show held at this venue=20
and if I am in attendance,my review will be=20
dedicated to her.=20
<br><br>
The lineup for this blues and southern soul=20
party included Betty Padgett,Leon=20
McMullen,Bigg Robb & Da Problem=20
Solvas,Nathaniel Kimble and Mel=20
Waiters.When I arrived,to my suprise it=20
wasn't a large crowd on hand.I know one of=20
the local SWAC colleges was having=20
homecoming and that usually attracts a=20
large crowd but I had no idea it would=20
effect the attendance of this show.I did run=20
into a couple of familar faces, my man=20
Cyerio Hughes(WGNL Radio=20
personality),Bluz Queen from "The Kitty=20
Kitty Club" and my Godfather, friend and=20
mentor,Jerry"Boogie"Mason along with his=20
beautiful daughter Kim were in the house.It=20
was plenty of people down front by the=20
stage area with their reserved tables and=20
we had a table down front as well so we=20
were in a good spot for tonight's show.It=20
was a BYOB affair so the people were=20
ready to get their blues on tonight. So with=20
my man Cyerio kicking it with "The=20
Godfather" and "Da Big Dawg" and plenty=20
of cold Bud Light on hand sit back good=20
people and let me take you on this blues=20
and southern soul ride.

The Tommy Johnson Blues Foundation is a non-
profit,=20
tax-exempt foundation working to preserve the legacy=20
and music of legendary blues=20
artist Tommy Johnson. The foundation's work has=20
been focused on restoring the Warm Springs=20
Cemetery in Crystal Springs, MS, where Tommy=20
Johnson has lain in an unmarked grave for more than=20
half a century.<br><br>
The church that maintained the cemetery has=20
gone to disrepair, and the land around the site=20
has reverted to private use. The Foundation=20
has been working to restore the grounds and=20
re-open public access to the cemetery. Through these=20
efforts the site was designated a=20
"historically significant abandoned cemetery"=20
by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History,=20
and in October of 2001 a headstone=20
was provided for Tommy Johnson's grave by the=20
Mount Zion Memorial Fund, a non-profit group that=20
helps to restore the grave sites of Mississippi=20
musicians. The gravestone is kept at the Crystal=20
Springs Public Library=20
until access to the cemetery is re-opened.

The Internet provides an amazing opportunity for the=20
music and entertainment business in the forthcoming=20
millennium.=20
Its ability to bypass the standardized channels of=20
distribution and dissemination of entertainment and=20
information will=20
change the way business is conducted forever.=20
<br><br>
For the music industry this means a shift away from a=20
model where a few major record labels act as=20
monopolies or=20
gatekeepers regulating the flow of music from the=20
artists to the consumers. In its place will emerge an=20
industry=20
where artists and small independent labels can have=20
direct contact with the public and little need for a=20
middle=20
man to manufacture and distribute the product.=20
<br><br>
Well Virginia at SOUL PATROL the future is now.
Bob Davis and crew have assembled an amazing=20
collection of some of the most entertaining music on=20
the planet and making the collection avaialable via=20
